The 39th Social Media Breakfast – Engagement means conversation, not a like or a follow – The Kolkata Chapter

 

The 39th chapter of Kolkata SMBTS started with a very pertinent topic – Engagement means conversation, not a like or a follow. Right at the top of discussion session the participants agreed that conversation was a bilateral process that involved exchange of meaningful ideas that continued over a certain period of time and something that was purpose oriented. The discussion took up the following issues thereafter:

  • Engagement is necessary in order to be successful on Social Media
  • Branding on Social Media can also be done by individuals but its need to be varied and not stereotypical
  • For likes on Facebook the thought process remains unknown
  • Liking or following a post on social media is a one way process
  • Interaction helps people understand their true position on Social Media
  • Serious posts generate less response on Social Media nowadays
  • Social Media has become a forum for personal interaction
  • Social Media has almost become unanimous with socializing. It is becoming an addiction almost
  • Social Media has altered several key concepts such as friendship
  • Facebook picture tags are mostly meaningless and it is very much a personal and informal forum

The general consensus, it seemed, was social media platforms may be losing its sheen in some instances and personal interaction was taking over from serious exchange of ideas and knowledge, as it was originally intended to do.
